NAME: Canti
CANON: FLCL (Furi Kuri)
CANON POINT: Post-FLCL, pre-Progressive
AGE: Unspecified (robot)
BACKGROUND: Wiki. If anything needs clarification, please let me know!

PERSONALITY: Medical Mechanica robots are all a little weird: some strange bits of fleshy membrane here, some bizarre alien geometries there. Mostly metal, partially applied narrative, and Canti is himself is little exception. So then, despite being a kinda eldritch vaguely human-shaped machine with no vocal capability whatsoever, Canti manages to be startlingly human in his mannerisms—more so than any other Medical Mechanica robot seen in the main series.

As Canti doesn’t have speakers or vocal cords, he generally communicates using body language and simple images on his screen. Failing that, he can display sentences in text to convey more complex information, but he doesn't do this very often. For the most part he prefers to get his feelings across with charades and animated gestures, and it serves him well in most cases.

He’s shown to also have somewhat of a personal fashion sense. Under most circumstances Canti doesn’t get cold, but he will wear a variety of clothing and/or accessories (like fake wings and a halo) over his torso—some given to him by other characters, some acquired on his own. His mainstay is his trademark green jacket, which he’s almost never seen without.

In general, Canti can be easily flustered. Like many actual humans, he expresses a measure of self-consciousness over his appearance; the back of his head is jagged and broken, courtesy Haruko bashing him with a guitar right after he emerged from Naota's forehead. He spends a fair amount of time in secret trying to repair it from bits and pieces of the old parts he'd found scattered in a field, and when Haruko catches him trying to glue them together he becomes startled and embarrassed. At one point he tries to settle for a hastily taped together cardboard box, but it just isn't the same.

Canti also demonstrates an unwavering politeness, often to the point of being a pushover. He’s easily strongarmed into running errands and doing household chores, which he can accomplish just fine for the most part and usually doesn’t mind. Despite being a powerful robot with no small amount of combat ability, Canti is perfectly fine with cooking, doing the dishes, and helping out around the house. He can be somewhat forgetful, however, which one could assume is a result of getting smacked on the head with a guitar. You can send him out to pick up your food or drink order, but you can expect him to get it just slightly wrong 9 times out of 10. He does his best!

He will usually go along with whatever plans he gets dragged into, even if those plans may not be in his best interests. Haruko ropes him into acting as her personal assistant for awhile before ditching him when she realizes he Kinda Sucks At It for her tastes, but he doesn’t really hold it against her. He tends to be pretty forgiving, even going so far as to offer to help Officer Kitsurubami back to her feet, despite the fact that she had just spent the last few minutes riddling him with bullets. Canti does care for people, and will go out of his way to help someone in need—even if that need is just someone to quietly share space with. If someone is lonely or upset, he’ll do his best to comfort them. For example, he protects Mamimi when she's in danger, and gives her a reassuring pat on the head when she's scared and shaking in the wake of a harrowing fight. He’s a good listener, and not only just because he can’t physically speak.

On another note, despite being an interdimensional alien robot made by an eldritch organization with intentions that are nefarious at best, Canti isn’t shown to hold a particular allegiance to them. He’s his own guy; he has no qualms fighting other Medical Mechanica machines in the service of protecting those around him and can dispatch them with aplomb—assuming he's got a catalyst to help, that is. Without a catalyst, though, he just ends up getting shoved around.

As a side note: he can also, against all logic, eat via shoving food through the grill on his monitor. He doesn’t seem to need to do so, however, but this causes no ill effects. It’s commented on in-universe as being incredibly weird and off-putting, but it’s never explained why this is possible and frankly, it’s best not to think too hard about it.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
  • N.O. Channel: Canti has the unique ability to channel the power of notorious space pirate Atomsk when he consumes a person with high enough N.O. capability. N.O. itself is the ability to turn oneself into a conduit which can bodily pull objects across vast distances in space. What constitutes someone with high N.O. levels is variable, but usually people with high levels of maturity give better results. When fused with a catalyst, Canti turns red and gains a significant increase in speed and physical strength. He can also turn into a cannon that fires a boomeranging bullet made of the essence of whomever he’s currently fused with. Being a catalyst in this way is a process that is jarring and invasive at best, so working with Canti on this level would require OOC communication.
  • Flight: Regardless of whether or not he’s in combat, Canti can hover and fly using thrusters on his torso.
  • X-Rays: Canti can take X-Ray images, which apparently comes with the territory of being a medical robot.

INVENTORY: Only himself and his outfit, which is really just a jacket and nothing else.

MOONBLESSING: Iris
